Recycling

Broadoaks recycle as much as 90% of excavated waste material we produce.

We separate any excavated materials on sites i.e. concrete, tarmac and pavers then take them to recycling yards around isle of Wight.

All of the waste material will go through a crushing machine, which crushes the waste material into different aggregate sizes  which can be reused on new driveways, patios and the roads.

All the soil that is excavated is taken to a recycling yard where it is put through a screening machine, which removes any roots, stone, brick, glass, producing clean soil for  re-using.

Any bushes that are remove are taken to recycling yard where they are put through a large shredder, produces mulch for garden beds.

The only material that goes to landfill is clay.

Useful information

Why hire a pro to install your new driveway, patio or paving project!

Although some of the smaller paving jobs can be tackled by the keen do-it-yourselfer, driveway paving is a large- scale project, for experienced professionals only.

A contractor will have access to the specialised tools and heavy equipment needed, and also would be able to foresee any difficulties that might come up during the job.

Also, a contractor will know all local council regulations.

Getting the right man or company for the job!

We always advise you to obtain at least three estimates or quotations for the paving work.

The cheapest price may not be the best of jobs, while a top price is no guarantee of quality. Prices vary significantly between contractors. If a paving company is employing tradesmen, the wage bill, and therefore the cost to the client, will be higher than a company who employ only labourers and young lads.

The quality of the materials used will also have a large impact on the price.

For example, we expect to pay £16 + vat for quality concrete paving blocks. There are similar blocks available at half that price, but they are of a poor quality, using softer concretes and inferior dyes. If you did not ask for a specified pavior, you run the risk of the contractor supplying cheaper, sub-standard materials.

What are they pricing for!

It is best to ensure that all potential contractors are quoting for the same work.

Draw up a specification, and ask each contractor to price for the works on the basis of that specification, and to make separate castings, for any optional or extra items they consider might be required, such as extra drainage gullies or kerbs.

What should be included in your quotation!

As a highly generalised rule, a written quotation  should include the following items as an absolute minimum

  1. Type/name/brand of paving or surfacing to be provided, including any relevant colour

  2. The construction method in brief - excavation depth; sub-base type and depth; edgings; drainage

  3. The total area to be paved or surfaced - edgings and kerbs should be quantified separately

  4. The cost of carrying out the work as specified above

  5. Any additional or optional costs

Terms and conditions / work schedules!

What are the terms and conditions of the price submitted by the contractor?

  1. Are they fully insured (minimum £1 million Public Liability )

  2. Do they Require a deposit? (Be carefull, Get a written receipt)

  3. What are the guarantees they offer

  4. When and how do they expect to be paid

  5. How long do they expect the job to take

  6. What maintenance service do they offer

  7. Can you withhold a retention sum until the final snagging is completed

  8. How do they handle disputes over quality or price
