Useful information

Key features when you are planning any hard landscaping

When you are planning your new driveway or designing the hard landscaped areas around your property, it's important to look at the drainage around the property, the design features like edgings and patterns inserted into your paving and steps.

Manhole covers: It is not uncommon to find a manhole cover is installed in the middle of a lawn, patio, driveway, or path. manhole covers are available in a range of styles. But they still stick out like a sore thumb, to overcome this there is a range of infill manhole covers which will help to blend the manhole cover into your driveway, patio or path's.

Design features: The design possibilities enabled by the use of these relatively small paving units are limited only by your imagination. If you can “see it in your mind’s eye”, then it can probably be constructed from block paving, such is their versatility and our expertise, you may like to consider having a diamond or circles in your driveway or Picture framing your patio.

Edging: The edging is designed to hold the paving systems together by not allowing outward movement of the paving. As you walk across the patio, path or as cars drive across paved driveway, they want to spread and the edging holds them tightly together maintaining a solid structure, edgings will also stop the loss of sub base materials being washed away. With out edging your pavement will spread and the structural integrity will be comprised.

Drainage: Inadequate drainage solutions can lead to serious problems which can damage the home. Some people have experienced water seeping into their home and their garage being flooded. These things can be attributed to a driveway or patio which is poorly planned. If you have not had any driveway problems, you surely would want to keep it that way – and in order to do so, it is vital that proper driveway or patio drainage solutions are put in place.

Steps: Steps play an important role in the design of the Front of a property and the garden areas. Just like flower beds they can be the connective glue to pull everything together. They need to be properly designed, safe and comfortable to use. Steps are usually constructed of any of these four materials concrete, brick, stone wood on concrete foundations, It is important to consider what your steps are made of to ensure its safety features, especially if you’re expecting plenty of foot traffic.

All driveway installations are not the same

There are differences between the products and there are differences in how they are installed. The best products installed incorrectly will leave you with a badly installed driveway, bad driveways are not always immediately visible but after just a few weeks or months block paving can begin to shift and edgings collapse if not installed to the required specification, correcting installation defects can often cost more than doing it properly first time round.

Block Paving

Block (or brick) paving can be used anywhere. They can be used to great effect as driveways, paths, or patios, or mixed with other paving types to create a unique feature. They are a viable alternative to the more traditional asphalt (tarmac surfaces), and are aesthetically superior to plain concrete.

The design possibilities enabled by the use of these relatively small paving units are limited only by your imagination. If you can “see it in your mind’s eye”, then it can probably be constructed from block paving, such is their versatility and our expertise.

Patios and Paving

Paving stones can be categorised into three main groups; Riven, Textured or Decorative. The principles involved in laying each type are basically the same, although the exact nature of the flag will determine how they may be jointed.

Many types of flagstone are not suitable for vehicular traffic (in case you wish to have a driveway constructed from flags) although some of the better quality products will be able to take traffic when laid on a full concrete bed.

Concrete: versatile and durable

Concrete is durable and flexible and can be used in many applications such as foundations for walls, driveways, path's patios shed bases, summerhouse bases and greenhouse bases much, its uses are endless.

Concrete is the preferred material for driveways and paths, and for good reason. As a driveway surface made of concrete is more expensive than gravel and tarmac, but less expensive than most of its rivals, like driveways made with Block or drive setts, and will outlast all of these products.

Your concrete driveway our path’s built to the correct specifications and properly maintained should have a life expectancy of about 25 to 35 years.

Resin-based Surfacing: Durable and Versatile

We can also create driveways and other surfaces using resin-based surfacing systems, tailored to suit your precise requirements and budget. The basic premise is that decorative or coloured gravel is “glued” to an existing solid surface by means of a transparent or coloured resin.

Extremely hard-wearing, these surfaces are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, and provide a finish that is relatively low-maintenance in comparison to conventional gravel.

The better systems are totally resistant to weeds, oil or petrol spillage, do not fade in UV sunlight, are capable of tolerating a wide range of temperatures and can be laid in a massive range of colours and patterns, as well as all sorts of logos and motifs.

Gravel, the most popular choice for driveways

Gravel is  the most popular choices for driveways and  landscaping project on the Isle of Wight, and it's easy to see why. It's easy to lay, low maintenance and looks good, on most large driveways and country homes. There's a big choice of colour, textures  so it's a good choice for for small and large driveways, you could even consider having your gravelled driveway edged with edgings or paving blocks to give your driveway the wow factor, the Choice of ideas is endless.

There is a huge amount of choice when it comes to choosing the gravel for your driveway. The cheapest is to get sea dredged shingle or gravel from local suppliers , you can buy the gravel in small bags or large bulk bags pending on your project,  As the price of the gravel rises, the gravel will usually be a better quality, more graded, and a larger choice of colours and textures from areas of the country.

Driveways with gradients that can feel unstable to drive or walk on there are different solutions for stabilising gravel driveways and path's, you could have stabilising grids fitted which keeps the gravel from moving when you drive on it or walk, so when you decide to have your new gravel driveway installed consider having driveway grades installed at the same time.

The sound of gravel under your feet is very satisfying and can also act as a defence, alerting you when uninvited guests are walking up your drive.

Permeable paving

Whether for commercial or domestic use, the process of laying paving has changed; permeable paving should now be the preferred system for all uses.

Permeable paving is usually used for a wide range of surfaces such as car parks, driveways, gardens and public roads. The main use of permeable paving is so it allows the flow of water to drain to natural sources.

Permeable Paving is an important component in the attempts to minimize impacts on water quality and sustainable urban drainage systems in the UK. The UK government places great importance on its development.
