Garden Decking

There are virtually unlimited design possibilities when building a deck. They can be single level, split- level, or built on several levels. They can be built over water, if you live by a stream or river, or around a swimming pool or pond. Pergolas, canopies or even a roof can be added for shade, with screens for privacy, balustrades or railings to keep the kids safe, and trellises for climbing plants to grow on. If the deck is elevated enough, the space beneath it can even be used to store away gardening equipment or children’s outdoor toys.

Wood is, of course, the traditional material for garden decking. For aesthetic appeal, nothing can really beat the soft beauty of natural wood. Most decks are built with wood that is treated with chemicals to make them resistant to weather and insects, but concerns about the environmental problems posed by these chemicals have driven more people to choose naturally resilient woods like redwood or teak.

All woods, however durable, still need maintenance and so there is also a growing trend towards composite decking using recycled plastics or synthetic materials for garden decking. These materials require little or no maintenance and are relatively easy to assemble. Recycled plastics and vinyl, often reinforced with aluminium, can also be combined with wood.

Types of decking

Softwood

Softwood decking and mainly produced in the Scandinavian countries and is the cheapest type of decking. It is fantastic value for money and if looked after properly with regular maintenance will last for years, can be a real cost effective way to create a  outside space. Softwood decking is readily available and is cut from softwood trees, which grow faster and therefore more economical.

Composite

As an alternative to natural wood decking,  composite decking is a solution that is environmentally friendly and sustainable, Made from a solid-composite with imprinted grain, it is incredibly strong, durable, and long lasting. There is no need to paint, oil, or treat, composite decking is low-maintenance just a quick brush over. Plus, with a wide range of designs and finishes, you’re sure to find the perfect composite decking to suit your outdoor space.

Hardwood

Hardwood decking is made from wood that is grown slowly, in tropical conditions. It is very durable and hard wearing decking solution, no matter the outdoor setting. With care and regular maintenance, hardwood will last you many years and will start to look better with ages.
